Antwerp is known as an LGBT-friendly city. The city believes diversity is very important, and nailed its colours to the mast in June and August. A successful campaign showed faith in mutual respect with, for example, colourfully-lit buildings. Because in Antwerp, everyone can shine.
Belgian technology enables automatic diamond cutting
For many years, automatic diamond cutting has remained a holy grain for the industry. A revolutionary technology, developed by the Belgian Scientific and Technical Research Centre for Diamond (WTOCD), finally turns the impossible dream into reality. The first appliance to benefit from the amazing technology is Fenix, a brand new machine that is a godsend for Antwerp’s diamond industry.
Antwerp is the world capital of the diamond industry. Not surprisingly, it is also Belgium’s jeweller’s city par excellence, with more jewellers per square metre than anywhere else in the country. Still, there is a great deal to be discovered outside of the diamond district. Take a stroll along the shop windows in the Golden Streets, right at the hart of the fashion district.
The most important attraction of the city is celebrating its birthday. Antwerp ZOO has been the centre of attention in Antwerp for 175 years. The zoo was opened in 1843, making it one of the oldest zoos in the world. This summer, 16 species of animals moved into the city to spread the news. A striking campaign that was greatly appreciated by residents and visitors.
Antwerp is looking forward to the SuperNova international tech event, which will be held in the city from 27 until 30 September 2018. The emphasis is on technological innovation and the future. We met with Pascal Cools, the Managing Director of Flanders District of Creativity (Flanders DC), who is co-organising the event.

The Beacon will officially open its doors on Thursday 27 September as a business and innovation hub for leading players in the world of the Internet of Things (IoT). This major initiative will contribute to Antwerp’s (inter)national positioning as a hub for digital innovation.
